The Narrative Director of Assassin s Creed Valhalla explains why the hidden blade of Eivor is not hidden

The Assassin s Creed Series Fans could notice in the Assassin s Creed Valhalla s gameplay trailer recently revealed that the protagonist, Eivor, does not wear his hidden blade Assassin s Brotherhood inside his forearm, As the protagonists of previous games are usually done, but rather outside, where the blade is in good view.

(If you are wondering why we use the pronouns they / them for Eivor, it s because you can, for the first time, choose the sex of the protagonist in an Assassin s Creed game. The two eivors are considered canons .)

Does not this go against the interest of having a hidden blade? The players wondered. But according to a tweet on the official account of Assassin s Creed, there is a good reason why Eivor chooses to display his blade like that.

It s a deliberate decision, said Darby Mcdevitt, a narrative director of Assassin s Creed Valhalla, in the video attached to Tweet. It s something that Eivor is very attached. When he or she seizes this hidden blade, Eivor realizes that it would be much more interesting to let people see this weapon, to be noticed about it. The Vikings were known to have a sense of honor and it was very important that when you kill someone, you know the people you killed them. »

Interesting - just when you thought it could not be better than having a protagonist who is a viking.

McDevitt added: Often people would not be punished for murder if they had a little justification, as if someone had insulted you. They would not be punished for the murder as long as they confess, as long as they openly declared: Yes, I killed that person because we went into combat. And so have the hidden blade visible is actually a kind of extension of this honor. We want this visible aspect of the blade to be reflected in the way Eivor presents itself to the world. »

In fact, Eivor is not the first playable character of Assassin s Creed to wear his blade outside the arm. Darius, in the DLC Assassin s Creed Odyssey Legacy of the First Blade, the fact also.

To be fair, Eivor is not a member of the fraternity of the assassins. They are rather affiliated with Hidden One, a precursor organization of the brotherhood. Due to narrative needs, Ubisoft has chosen to move the focus of the conflict between the Brotherhood of Assassins and the order of the Knights Templars to the conflict between the Hidden One and the Order of the Ancients instead.
